What does it mean to establish paternity?

Establishing paternity is generally applicable to fathers who have children outside of wedlock, that is, they are unmarried. You establish paternity in order to establish child support. You have an obligation to that child. You could acknowledge it: "That is my child." Or, you of course can have DNA testing. Establishing paternity also gives you the opportunity to establish time-sharing agreements, pursuant to the statutes, because you have been legally determined to be the father of that child, and this is important when you are talking about an unmarried parent.
